An expert on federal funding and healthcare policy, Katie Vanlandingham offers guidance to clients in the areas of appropriations, healthcare, education, and defense. Katie helps develop and implement federal strategies for some of the firm’s non-profit, association, academic medical center, university, corporate, and coalition clients.
Katie has 19 years of Capitol Hill experience - both as a Congressional staffer and a government affairs consultant. She has extensive experience working with non-profit organizations and has a notable track record in helping clients secure federal funding and achieve their federal objectives. Katie also has successfully planned and executed numerous annual Washington advocacy trips for non-profit clients, including one that has led to the creation of a national coalition and consistent increased Federal research funding.
While in the private sector, Katie has successfully advocated and secured funding and legislative language for clients’ priorities and initiatives. She consistently serves as a source of expertise for clients on matters relating to the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and has helped secure millions of dollars for various research programs, including programs for neurofibromatosis and reconstructive transplant research. While working with Rotary International, Katie has helped secure more than $2 billion in Federal funding for global polio eradication through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Agency for International Development. She has also successfully obtained consistent increased funding through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that supports a multi-university based education and research program that has been repeatedly targeted for elimination in the President’s budget.
Prior to joining VSA, Katie served for six years in a similar capacity at another government relations firm. She also previously worked in various capacities for Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), a former member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Before coming to Washington, D.C., Katie worked for a national business-to-business marketing and advertising company in Overland Park, Kansas.
Katie has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Truman State University. She resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband and two daughters.
